Joint press release from the “Sortir du nuclear” network and Greenpeace France. On June 22, the ‘Sortir du nuclear’ network and Greenpeace France filed an action for annulment against the new Multi-Year Energy Program (PPE), which extends the operating life of almost all nuclear reactors beyond 40 years, even beyond 50. Approved by decree of the Prime Minister and published on April 23, 2020, the Multi-year Energy Programming (PPE) defines the main lines of French energy policy for the coming years. Although this text devotes few pages to nuclear power, the guidelines it contains carry serious consequences. Indeed, it postpones by ten years the deadline initially planned to reach the objective of 50% of nuclear in the electric mix. And if it plans to close 14 reactors by 2035, it is primarily based on the principle that the entire French nuclear fleet – with rare exceptions – must operate beyond its 4th decennial visit and until its 5th visit at least ten years, more than 50 years. The closure of Fessenheim is therefore the exception which proves the rule.
