On July 11, 2020, the reactor vessel 2 of the Fessenheim nuclear power plant, which was permanently shut down at the end of June, was opened to remove the fuel. It was while participating in this operation that an employee was contaminated by a radioactive particle that had stuck to his skin, at the knee. It therefore passed through the protective devices supposed to protect workers exposed to radioactive substances. The employee’s contamination was detected when he left the reactor building. The radioactive material therefore irradiated it directly until the end of its intervention in the nuclear zone.
