Worrisome increase in serious incidents at EDF nuclear power plants. ANALYSIS. Serious incidents at the EDF nuclear fleet in France have increased in recent years and mostly concern the seismic risk, to which reactor back-up diesels are particularly vulnerable, according to an analysis by the “Global Chance” association published in December 2020. This accumulation of incidents, some of which affected dozens of reactors, testifies to the worrying state of the nuclear fleet, says the report which is based mainly on the reports of incidents classified as “level 2” between 2010 and 2020 by the Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN) and reports from the Institute for Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN). The importance of these incidents in terms of safety and risks is not sufficiently known, believe Bernard Laponche and Jean-Luc Thierry, the authors of the report.
