Taking into account the seismic hazard, one of the steps of which is to identify potentially active faults, is essential to guarantee the safety of nuclear installations. IRSN publishes an open access database for the French mainland (BDFA). A true snapshot of the data available in 2014, this development benefited from the support of the Ministry of Ecological and Inclusive Transition. It is a synthesis of knowledge aimed at identifying known faults and likely to produce earthquakes in the future. Indeed, identifying and characterizing faults having had activity in recent geological times is a fundamental step to assess seismic hazard. In the context of nuclear safety, this approach is notably recommended by guides such as the fundamental safety rule (France) as well as those of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) or the American regulatory agency nuclear (US NRC).
