Environmentalists want to stop the extraction of North Sea fossil fuels — but official data indicates that home-produced oil and gas emits less than half the greenhouse gases as the foreign imports on which the UK could be forced to rely. Green campaigners have condemned Boris Johnson’s administration for continuing to grant licences to search for oil and gas in the North Sea, arguing that fossil fuels drive climate change. They want Britain to block plans to exploit the Cambo oilfield off Shetland, which could yield more than 800 million barrels of oil. Nicola Sturgeon, the first minister, has also raised concerns.
