Global energy titan BP is investing in a company that plants forests as part of a push to convince critics of its green credentials. BP’s venture capital arm will hand over $5m (£3.9m) to boost the growth of Finite Carbon, which manages more than 40 forest projects across three million acres. The oil company’s bet on forest management comes as its industry tries to tackle climate change. It follows a £10m carbon credit initiative launched by Shell in the UK which will see cash used to help fund the restoration of forests.

Prince Charles has called on the City of London to help protect the environment by investing trillions of pounds into green investments which help create a sustainable economy. In an interview with the Evening Standard the heir to the British throne said big businesses and City investors must drive a rapid decarbonisation of the economy before the environmental crisis becomes “a total catastrophe”. The prince said green investment has “suddenly taken off” because the returns on sustainable projects are now better than those for fossil fuels.

Former Norwegian prime minister Gro Harlem Brundtland has said the oil industry is “undermining” the fight against climate change. Ms Brundtland, chairwoman of the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED), said progress towards a greener future has been hindered by the oil industry. The 80-year-old, speaking at the One Young World conference, said action on the recommendations for sustainable development made in a 1987 report by the WCED have been held back by oil magnates. The report, Our Common Future, advocated countries establishing international environmental standards to combat climate change.
