Nicola Sturgeon has been criticised by climate campaigners for failing to call for the new Cambo oilfield to be blocked because of the climate crisis. Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth Scotland accused the Scottish first minister of “hiding behind Boris Johnson” and not showing leadership after she resisted intense pressure to call for an end to new North Sea drilling. In a letter to the prime minister on Thursday, Sturgeon instead said the Cambo proposal and other North Sea projects where drilling had not yet begun should be subjected to a much tougher appraisal given the severity of the climate emergency.

Nicola Sturgeon is facing a backlash from within her own party and from environmental activists after urging Boris Johnson to “reassess” plans for a major oil field off the north of Scotland. Scotland’s first minister said the prime minister should reconsider the drilling licence for the Cambo field off Shetland and for others where no development had yet taken place. One senior figure in the SNP today attacked Sturgeon and accused her of putting thousands of jobs in the northeast of Scotland at risk. But green campaigners urged her to go further on the issue. Liam Kerr, the Scottish Conservative net-zero spokesman, said: “Nicola Sturgeon is putting her nationalist alliance with the Greens ahead of Scotland’s economy. “We’re already seeing the dangerous influence of the Greens and their hardline ideology on the SNP government, even before the coalition of chaos has been rubber-stamped. “The oil and gas sector supports over 100,000 Scottish jobs and the development of the Cambo field could create thousands more.”
