Many will remember the iconic image of the village of Muchelney which was transformed into the island of Muchelney, with a daily boat service ferrying essential supplies to marooned villagers and local businesses. The impact of the Somerset flooding was total and all-embracing, with 600 homes submerged and damage totalling millions of pounds. Teams of scientists then trawled through the data which showed — somewhat unsurprisingly — that these devastating floods were made more likely by our continued greenhouse gas emissions. In fact, recent data shows that global heating has already contributed to a 40 per cent increase in extreme rainfall in the UK.
