The government grant of £3,500 for anyone who wants to buy an electric car “will go eventually”, the transport secretary has warned. “I make no bones about it,” said Grant Shapps. “We want to remove all the subsidy. So you can see this in two ways. If you are out there reading this, thinking of buying an electric car, buy it while the subsidy’s there, because it will go eventually.” He told this newspaper he could not promise “lots of extra public bungs of taxpayers’ cash so you can buy your new car”. Shapps himself benefited from the grant, receiving a £3,500 contribution to his new £44,090 self-driving Tesla Model 3, which he was finally able to buy last month after two years on the waiting list.
