The president of the European Council has demanded that Brussels block plans for a Russian gas pipeline to Germany. Donald Tusk has written to Jean-Claude Juncker to ask the European Commission to use its powers to stop Gazprom’s Nord Stream 2 project. He warned that it would strengthen Russia’s grip over the EU’s energy supply, leaving it “at Russia’s mercy” at a time when Kremlin “aggression has not ended”. Mr Tusk, a former prime minister of Poland, believes that the gas deal will expose Europe by making it more dependent on Russian energy, which President Putin can withhold at any time for political purposes.
