RWE plans to build Britain’s biggest gas-fired power station on the site of its defunct Tilbury biomass plant in Essex. The German energy group said that it was beginning the planning for a possible 2.5 gigawatt combined cycle gas turbine plant at the site. It is also considering building an energy storage facility and a 300 megawatt capacity open cycle gas turbine plant, which is a type of power station that is less efficient but more flexible than a combined cycle gas turbine, RWE said that the Tilbury site was “considered to be one of the best in the country for power generation, given its proximity to London, the National Grid electrical and gas system and cooling water from the River Thames”.
