Good Energy plans to make its first move into the UK’s nascent battery storage market next summer, announcing yesterday it has reached an agreement to install five fridge-sized electricity storage units at the Eden Project in Cornwall. The renewable energy supplier said the 50kW battery units and accompanying control centre would help the eco visitor attraction match its electricity demand with supply in order to boost efficiency, delivering cost savings and environmental benefits.

The debut of the world’s largest battery, hailed as a high-tech solution to electricity cuts, was marred yesterday by a storm that tore down power lines. The £28 million battery bank built by Elon Musk, the billionaire American inventor and Tesla entrepreneur, sits in a normally dusty hamlet in South Australia, linked to a nearby wind farm that charges it. Officials and journalists gathered in Jamestown, about 130 miles (215km) north of Adelaide, to see the vast lithium ion power source switched on, making it ready to fill gaps in supply in the power-hungry state. Yet within hours a storm brought down nearby transmission lines, creating blackouts in Jameston and other local communities.
