GFG Alliance, the industrial group chaired by Sanjeev Gupta, has called on the government to commit to a low carbon future when it unveils its industrial strategy white paper this week. Jay Hambro, chief executive officer at GFG, whose steel division Liberty House rescued Dalzell steel mills from closure and owns the UK’s last aluminium smelter in Fort William, said the government needs to do more to encourage investment in green energy. He said promoting green energy was essential to improving the UK’s moribund productivity rate, which last week forced the Office for Budget Responsibility to slash its growth forecasts. GFG’s energy division, SIMEC, has invested £450m to acquire or install renewable energy over the past 18 months to power Liberty’s industrial activities.
