Insulating the UK’s draughty housing stock must be a top priority as soon as lockdown is lifted, according to energy efficiency experts who warned that the “stay at home” order has exposed an energy efficiency crisis in UK homes. Energy use in the home has jumped by 30 per cent since the lockdown, and more than one in ten households are struggling to pay their energy bills, according to a Citizens’ Advice survey this month. Yet households have been fortunate to endure a Spring lockdown. “If we were going through this in the winter months families would be facing higher gas bills,” said Dr Jonathan Marshall of the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU).
