As the UK begins preparations for the net zero transition, one of the biggest decarbonisation battles looks set to be fought in the construction sector. A report published today seeks to confront the challenge head-on, by outlining a blueprint to build up a mainstream market in energy efficient mortgages. Produced by the World Green Building Council’s Europe network in partnership with E.ON, Creating an Energy Efficient Mortgage for Europe considers how stakeholders can work together to ensure new green home finance options have broad appeal to borrowers. Drawing on consumer research and previous pilots – such as last year’s European Mortgage Federation initiative, which saw 46 major banks sign up to develop green lending products – the report emphasises that the finance and green building sectors will need to collaborate closely to drive market growth.
