Letter Emeritus Professor Ian Fells, Former president, Institute of Energy: We must wish Professor Dieter Helm good luck in producing his ambitious review of energy costs over the next three months with one arm tied behind his back, the result of excluding smart meters and Hinkley Point from his study. The development of a realistic energy policy has always been bedevilled by the short-termism of successive energy ministers with an eye on votes. In the 1980s the Institute of Energy advocated setting up an energy forum of experienced professionals who were not influenced by fashionable enthusiasms and were able to take a long view of energy policy. Such advice would be very welcome now.
