Power demand across the UK is expected to drop to record low levels over this bank holiday weekend, with one energy supplier set to pay customers to use more electricity to help the grid cope. The National Grid expects power demand on Sunday afternoon to slump to a record low as a result of the lockdown and the long weekend. It has asked for emergency powers to force wind and solar plants to close if the grid is overwhelmed with surplus electricity. But one energy supplier believes encouraging people to use more electricity could be a better way to ease pressure on the grid.
