Wind and solar farms and other sources of renewable power have produced more electricity than fossil fuels for the first time in a three-month period. Renewable power has previously exceeded fossil fuel power in a single month but doing so over an entire quarter shows how rapidly the UK’s electricity supply is switching to zero-carbon alternatives. During July, August and September, a total of 29.5 terawatt hours (TWh) of power was generated from renewable sources, compared with just 29.1TWh from gas, coal and oil, according to analysis of electricity industry data by the website Carbon Brief.
