Nuclear operator EDF Energy today confirmed both reactors at Dungeness B will continue to be out of service until July. The reactors shut down in September 2018, when safety inspections revealed corrosion in both cores and in associated pipework. Both AGR generators at the plant in Kent entered service in the mid-1980s. EDF is seeking to extend the units’ working lives until 2028 and potentially beyond. Earlier this week, the operator extended until June two planned maintenance shutdowns at its Hinkley Point B station. Extended inspections of the radiator cores are required at Hinkley B and at Hunterston, EDF’s two longest operating plants. EDF operates eight nuclear stations in the UK, accounting for about 20 per cent of the nation’s electricity.
