Limejump’s “virtual power plant” technology has become the first aggregated unit to compete in the National Grid’s Balancing Mechanism market after securing approval from Ofgem. The move means renewable and distributed power generators will for the first time be able to compete for a share of revenues from the £1bn per year balancing market alongside larger power generators and the Big Six energy suppliers, the grid flexibility and energy storage specialist announced this week. Limejump’s technology allows smaller renewables generators, demand side response (DSR) providers, and battery storage units to directly access the Balancing Mechanism market, which has until now largely been the domain of power plants and specific distribution sites with a generation license, Limejump explained.
