The Queen will be attending the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow later this year, the government has confirmed. But although constitutionally she is the UK’s head of state, by convention she does not take a political role in running the country. So she won’t be getting down to the nitty-gritty of the talks themselves, when it is hoped nations will thrash out plans for cutting greenhouse gas emissions. Instead, the her presence is ceremonial, a signal to the world of how important a successful summit is to the UK, according to Gareth Redmond-King, COP26 lead at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit.
