Alex Sobel: It is perhaps convenient then that the government’s Environment Bill comes before the House of Commons for its second reading this week. This provides the perfect vehicle to deliver the change we need to tackle our climate emergency and ensure that we protect the planet for future generations. Unfortunately, the government’s vehicle is in the environmental slow lane and won’t deliver the fundamental changes we need at the pace we need to make them. Sea levels are rising faster than at any point in the past 3,000 years and there is more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere than there has been in the past 800,000 years. If we aren’t more ambitious, we risk missing the window we have to stop irreparable damage to our environment. I’ve been working with More United on amendments to the bill that will help raise the ambition of the government and deliver the meaningful change we need. More United is the largest cross-party group in parliament, bringing together 64 MPs from six different political parties, to tackle the biggest challenges we face.
