Durham has been named the UK’s greenest city after reducing carbon emissions by half and improving its air quality. Specialists at the Solar Centre went through government data and ranked cities on ten criteria, from waste management to air quality, carbon emissions and space for nature. The city of Durham reduced its carbon emissions by 47 per cent between 2009-19, and has the best score for air quality. The number of parks and green spaces also causes it to rank first on the list. It also has a number of other initiatives planned or in place, in an attempt to reduce their emissions by 80 per cent by 2030. These plans include solar panel installations, £2M to retrofit buildings to improve energy efficiency and working with schools to educate pupils properly on energy use.
