Fires that raged in the Amazon last month may have been the worst in a decade, monitors said as CO2 emissions from Arctic fires in Russia reached record levels and temperatures “rarely ever seen” were forecast this weekend in California. There were more Amazon fires last month than in the same disastrous month last year, despite the Brazilian space agency initially saying that the number had fallen. Officials later said that their data was incomplete because of a Nasa satellite malfunction. Once corrected it is expected to show a rise of between 1 and 2 per cent.
