An extreme heatwave is thought to have killed dozens of people in the Pacific Northwest, where record-breaking temperatures have brought highs of nearly 49C (120F) in some areas. Officials in the Canadian province of British Columbia said at least 233 people died between Friday and Monday – about 100 more than the average for a four-day period – and warned the number of deaths was expected to rise as more reports were filed.
