It is a tough question, whether we should continue to allow companies that are, in all but name, instruments of the Chinese state to participate in our communications and infrastructure. The latest US sanctions make it almost inevitable that, like it or not, we shall be obliged to renounce any role for Huawei in British 5G technology. On the wider front, however, when we are about to embrace a new destiny outside the European trading bloc, it is doubtful we can afford the principled gesture of altogether turning our backs on China. Trump’s America may — at a price — be able to grandstand. We cannot.
