COUNCILLORS will do everything they can to block the potential development of a nuclear power station at Bradwell. Designs for a new nuclear power station close to the site of a former plant have been revealed. The reactor and buildings – designed by EDF and China General Nuclear – could be built at Bradwell-on-Sea. The design for the new Bradwell B reactor has passed the first step of a four-step process, and will be assessed by UK nuclear regulators. But the Blackwater Against New Nuclear Group has warned about the risks. Peter Banks, West Mersea Town Councillor and member of BANNG, spoke at Colchester Council’s Cabinet meeting on Wednesday to secure its support. He said: “This is deeply concerning on a number of levels and I am pleased to know Colchester Council is also opposed to Bradwell B. “It is economically irresponsible, the sums simply do not add up. It’s scientifically irresponsible, morally irresponsible and environmentally irresponsible. “To consider building such a massive project on a tidal floodplain is frankly an unsound proposal.” He said it would be leaving an unpleasant legacy for children, with ongoing costs for the radioactive waste.
