Wood biomass is classified as a renewable energy source, despite it producing 8 per cent more carbon dioxide than burning coal. The UK biomass energy industry faces criticism over its dependency on stripping US forests to seek out a supply of wood pellets. Millions of tonnes of wood pellets are being imported from forests in the south of the United States to Drax Power in a controversial move to prop up the supplies of wood demanded by the controversial biomass industry, research by environmental organisations the National Research Defense Council and Dogwood Alliance has claimed.
