On Friday, February 16, 2018, an irregularity was detected when the safety diesels were automatically switched on at the Doel 1 and 2 nuclear power stations. This incident was classified on level 1 of the INES scale. It had no impact on the safety of staff and people, nor on the environment. In nuclear power plants, there are always several safety diesel generators that take over the power supply internally when the external electrical grid is lost. In this way, the electricity in the nuclear power plants is always certain. These diesel generators receive a signal when they need to switch on automatically. A check on February 16, 2018 found that the system to automatically switch one of the safety diesel generators did not work properly. As a result, it was not certain that the diesel could always switch automatically. It was still possible to switch the diesel via manual operation and all the testing requirements were always executed correctly and successfully.
