The much-heralded nuclear deal between India and the United States that was announced by US President George Bush and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on March 2, 2006, has now reached an impasse and is even threatening to unravel. Three days of intensive negotiations starting May 31 in New Delhi, between US Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs and the chief US negotiator of the Indo-US nuclear accord, Nicholas Burns, and his Indian counterpart, Foreign Secretary Shivashankar Menon, failed to resolve key differences.

Iran
The Group of Eight powers today threatened to take “new measures” against Iran if the Islamic republic continues to enrich uranium for its nuclear programme, despite UN demand. In their final communique from a three-day annual summit, the G8 said: “We deplore the fact that Iran has so far failed to meet its obligations” under UN Security Council resolutions on its nuclear programme. It said it “will support adopting further measures, should Iran refuse to comply with its obligations.”

Nukem
NUCLEAR engineering firm Nukem Limited has been bought by French company Freyssinet. The firm, which has offices at Westlakes Science Park, near Whitehaven and the Sellafield site, is the UK’s biggest independent nuclear engineering, consultancy and radiation safety services provider. It has also established a charitable trust so its contract work at Sellafield has spin-offs for the community. Nukem, which specialises in waste management and decommissioning, employs around 80 people.

Terror
