Another week, another headache. MPs who are undecided as to how to vote over the Blair-Brown plan to renew Britain’s Trident nuclear missile fleet sooner rather than later or never could do worse than read today’s waspish report from the Commons defence select committee. Though chaired by Tory ex-defence minister and patriotic traditionalist James Arbuthnot, it asks probing questions about the overall cost (and who is going to pay for it?), the implications for wider non-proliferation (Iran, etc.), and wonders quite what the hurry is. Ministers expect more than 60 Labour MPs to abstain or desert, along with Sir Ming’s troops who voted in Harrogate on Saturday for delay. But the government will be saved by the Tories. On defence, where Labour has been split since Ramsay MacDonald was a pacifist, it was ever thus.
