Gordon Brown is expected to give the go-ahead to a new generation of nuclear power stations with the costs underwritten by the Treasury. The Treasury expects the private sector will build and fund the nuclear stations although the Government may have to pay some of the waste disposal costs.

Dounreay
Nuclear plant bosses are revealing how they plan to deal with the clean-up of thousands of radioactive particles released into the sea. The preferred option for removing the particles released from the Dounreay site in Caithness is being announced. A public consultation has been held on how best to dispose of the fragments, which were leaked from the Scottish plant to the surrounding environment in the 1960s and 1970s.

A TEENAGE labourer died after falling 35ft down a manhole on a nuclear power plant. Kevin Horner, 19, had been working in Olkiluoto, Finland, for just seven days when he plunged down the hole. The teenager from Hartlepool suffered severe head injuries and was taken to hospital 30 miles away in the city of Pori.

The International Nuclear Recycling Alliance, led by Areva and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, has signed a contract with the US Department of Energy to evaluate closing the nuclear fuel cycle in the US, through the development of a nuclear fuel recycling center and an advanced recycling reactor, Areva said. INRA also includes Japan Nuclear Fuel Ltd, Washington Group International, BWX Technologies Inc and Battelle. The contract was awarded within the framework of the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership, which seeks to close the nuclear fuel cycle by recycling used fuel in ways that both minimize proliferation risks and reduce the volume and toxicity of final waste residues.
