The Prime Minister greeted the publication of the report showing that the Earth is heading for a warmer age at a quickening pace by announcing that he wanted to introduce bigger long-term cuts in carbon emissions than had been previously planned. Mr Brown will set out in the next few days various ways in which he believes emissions can be cut. But he confirmed that he will be asking the Government’s own environmental experts to consider whether the UK’s existing targets for reducing carbon emissions can be extended.

Eurostar
The new high-speed Eurostar from London to the Channel tunnel, lauded last week as the world’s first “green train”, is powered by electricity from Britain’s nuclear reactors. The revelation has embarrassed Eurostar, which is attempting to promote itself as an environmentally friendly company, and prompted accusations of “eco-spin” and “double standards”. It has also posed awkward dilemmas for environmental groups which back the train but oppose nuclear power. Friends of the Earth in England has signed a formal partnership agreement with Eurostar, allowing the company to claim the group’s endorsement.

Gas
Energy companies are planning to invest at least £1.5bn in new UK gas storage facilities to double capacity by the end of the decade. Centrica, which already owns Britain’s largest facility, the Rough site, off the North East coast, wants to expand in this area in particular. It is looking at several potential sites on and offshore.

Bad news for British Energy is good news for Drax, Britain’s largest power station. Shares in the company rose by nearly 3 per cent after British Energy first warned investors of the new problems last month.
