Letter from Steuart Campbell: Professor Geoffrey Boulton (your report, 12 December) appears to believe, like the SNP, that Scotland can ultimately obtain all its electricity from renewable sources. Surely he knows this is impossible: generating more than 20 per cent of our electricity from such erratic sources would destabilise the grid.

Iran
RUSSIA has delivered the first shipment of nuclear fuel to Iran’s Bushehr atomic power station, a step western powers worried by Tehran’s nuclear ambitions had urged Moscow not to take. Anticipating a diplomatic storm, Russia said yesterday that Tehran had given assurances that the fuel sent to Bushehr would not be used for other purposes, and it urged Tehran to drop its uranium enrichment programme.

Britain’s gas and electricity supplies could be at the mercy of unstable governments or politically motivated investors unless the UK achieves energy independence, John Hutton, the Business and Enterprise Secretary, has warned.
