Russia
Gazprom could be poised to cross into the nuclear power sector with the blessing of the government, reports emanating from Moscow have suggested. According to the Russian news agency Prime-Tass, Russia’s deputy prime minister Alexander Zhukov has given his backing to a proposal that would involve Gazprom financing the construction of nuclear facilities domestically.

New nukes
If a new fleet of nuclear power plants is to be part of the UK’s future energy solution then the biggest problem to overcome will be the cost of construction. However, energy minister Malcolm Wicks has suggested that carbon pricing could be the answer. In the past the high set-up costs for nuclear power was largely shouldered by the state through public funding. However, while appearing to support the nuclear option, current UK leader Tony Blair also seems keen for public money not to be involved.

BOSSES at Torness nuclear power station want to reduce the amount of radioactive waste being discharged into the North Sea. The maximum amount of “radioactive” water – known as tritium – being discharged into the sea every year at the Dunbar plant will be lowered if bosses at Scottish Environmental Protection Agency approve the plan.
