A CANCER sufferer called for action last night amid claims levels in women living near a nuclear power station were more than 15 times the national average. The shocking results of a study carried out around the former Trawsfynydd station were analysed by an environmental scientist who declared the cancer rates “alarmingly high”.

Behind closed doors, the French establishment is engaged in an intense debate over whether or not the country’s entire electro-nuclear industry should be reworked. The debate has arisen as a result of the present government’s decision to revoke plans to privatise Areva – the world’s largest nuclear group, whose activities span the entire nuclear fuel cycle from mining to the construction of new-generation power plants and the transmission of electricity.

In characteristic New Labour fashion, Tony Blair is reported to have ruled out financial incentives from the state for new nuclear plants in the UK. At the moment, the old arguments about the relative cost of atomic power are being overshadowed by a new one: the cost of being over-reliant on imported, carbon dioxide-producing gas. Still, private investors will want to ensure they make a decent return. Unlike coal and gas-fired plants, only about 5 per cent of the cost of nuclear power relates to fuel. Capital investment is the biggest factor.

Letter: Mikhail Gorbachev urges us to think not twice, but seven times, before restarting a nuclear programme in Britain because Chernobyl has convinced him of the dangers of nuclear power. But ther is no chance of such an acident here.

The government has refused to comment on claims that Prime Minister Tony Blair will press the case for new nuclear power plants but is also against financial incentives for the industry. Blair’s spokesman said the government’s energy review, expected next month, would set out the position.
