Buoyed by the success of its break-up settlement with Eon, Germany’s largest electricity and gas group, the European Commission is eyeing further deals with leading European energy groups, including RWE and EDF. As the implications of the unexpected pact were digested across the Continent yesterday, it emerged that the potential exposure to huge damages actions by its customers, as well as the threat of heavy fines, was one of the main factors that drove Eon to negotiate the deal.

Three years ago, in an eye-catching study, the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research calculated that if Britain were to meet its target of cutting greenhouse gases by 60 per cent by 2050, and emissions from aviation were not reduced, all other emissions – from households, businesses, energy generation and motor transport – would have to go to zero. Flying would be taking up everything that was available.
