Wylfa Newydd is the biggest investment in North Wales for a generation with the project expected to cost around £12bn and bring thousands of jobs. But getting the scheme over the finishing line will not be an easy task with planning, regulation, and funding hurdles to negotiate as well as a vocal anti-nuclear brigade. Here we spell out the details of the application, the issues that need to be resolved, and current timescales. The company is preparing the Development Consent Order (DCO) application, the planning application to build Wylfa Newydd, which will be submitted to the Planning Inspectorate in the first quarter of 2018. Subject to planning approval, work is scheduled to commence in the second half of 2018. It’s still the plan to deliver commercial operations for Wylfa in the mid-2020s.
