SSE has been fined £700,000 by the industry regulator after missing targets for its smart meter rollout last year. Regulator Ofgem said that, while the company had met its target for electricity smart meters installation, it fell short for gas meters. SSE will pay the fee into the Ofgem’s consumer redress fund, which supports customers in vulnerable situations. Energy suppliers are required to make reasonable steps in order to hit the Government’s target of having smart meters in every home in the UK by 2020. Suppliers with more than 250,000 customers such as SSE must also set annual targets for the number of their customers that will have smart meters by the end of each year.
