Letter: Smart meters are essential to the roll-out of electric vehicles. They help motorists save money by charging while power is cheapest and cleanest – when demand is low. This will limit the extra demand that electric cars put on the network at peak times. As the trade body representing 90% of energy suppliers and generators, we believe that this is the best way to manage demand while maintaining customer choice. So it’s not accurate to state that the “industry” favours forcibly interrupting people charging their cars. Energy UK is firmly opposed to this proposal. It is equally wrong to claim that any suppliers are opposed to flexible rates, when they all view these as playing a critical role in the future energy system. We will continue to work alongside a wide range of stakeholders, including consumer representatives, to ensure that the customer experience of charging an electric vehicle continues to improve as the market grows.
