London is to get its first ‘virtual power station’ that uses electricity generated solely by household solar panels and battery storage, UK Power Networks announced on Friday. Batteries will be installed 40 homes already fitted with solar panels in the London borough of Barnet, UKPN said, with a view to having the system up and running this winter. The batteries can be remotely controlled to combine the output from domestic solar panels and ensure they are fully charged for the weekday evening peak demand. This will enable local residents to both save and earn money from their batteries, which will help to balance the grid between peaks and troughs in electricity demand. The network operator said it is the first time people with solar panels and battery storage installed at home will be paid to support the distribution network in this way.
