Vladimir Putin has revealed plans to secure Russia’s foothold in the Arctic – including a boost to his nuclear icebreaker fleet and revamping Soviet-era military bases in the area. The Kremlin strongman is set to expand the country’s nuclear icebreaker fleet from four to nine by 2035, he revealed at the Arctic Forum in St Petersburg today. Russia is expected to have 13 heavy icebreakers by 2035 – with three nuclear-powered ones already being made.
