Wind power capacity and generation across the EU continued to grow last year, as more powerful turbines helped to drive up renewables share of the overall electricity mix, statistics released today by WindEurope confirm. Wind energy from offshore and onshore farms provided 14 per cent of the EU’s electricity in 2018, up from 12 per cent the year before, according to the trade body’s latest figures. The increased share came as Europe’s wind capacity grew by 11.3GW last year, including 8.6GW from new onshore projects and 2.65GW from additional offshore capacity. Europe now boasts 189GW of wind power capacity in total, with the overwhelming majority – 171GW – coming from onshore wind farms, the statistics show. Offshore wind farms now provide 18GW of capacity.
