The marine renewable energy industry could create thousands of jobs across Scotland after a new report found the sector is capable of meeting strict requirements imposed by the UK Government. Experts are now calling for Holyrood and Westminster to unlock the potential of tidal and wave power and place the UK at the forefront of the developing market. An evidence-based study by think-tank Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult found the tidal stream industry could generate a net cumulative benefit to the UK of £1.4bn, including considerable exports, as well as supporting 4,000 jobs by 2030. Wave energy could support 8,100 jobs by 2040 and contribute £4bn. The report predicted the jobs created would be centred in coastal areas “with greater need for economic regeneration” such as Scotland, Wales and the south-west of England.
