The GMB union has described what it called the effective closure of the BiFab yards in Fife and Lewis as a “dark day” for the Scottish economy. It comes after further redundancies were confirmed, leaving seven staff being offered part-time positions to oversee maintenance and security. New Canadian owners, DF Barnes, said they were working tirelessly to secure new engineering contracts for BiFab. Twelve senior managers will be retained the union has said.

The troubled Burntisland Fabrications construction yards will be returned to full production with more workers, the Canadian owners have said. Trade unions warned yesterday that the yards in Fife and on Lewis faced a desperate future with almost no workers left on the sites. The BiFab yards had a core workforce of 400 with a further 1,000 contractors getting regular work before it ran into financial problems late last year. The Scottish government stepped in last April to broker a deal, which led to JV Driver, the construction conglomerate, acquiring BiFab through its subsidiary, DF Barnes. That acquisition was hailed as a success by ministers but a trickle of redundancies has left seven staff on site.
