International delegates to a preparatory meeting for the 2020 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference have expressed a range of opinions on whether their countries should build more nuclear plants. The meeting is underway in Geneva. Participants on Tuesday discussed the peaceful use of nuclear energy. A Russian representative indicated the country’s willingness to construct reactors and said the world has recovered from the psychological shock caused by the 2011 nuclear accident in Japan. A Chinese official said nuclear power is an important option in the fight against global warming. China is pressing ahead with construction of nuclear plants. A delegate from Germany referred to the risks of nuclear power, saying accidents at Chernobyl and Fukushima had serious consequences. A Japanese official said nuclear plants around the world must observe the highest levels of safety, using lessons learned from the disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.
