Budget 2020: carbon tax pledge is all talk, says government climate adviser. The carbon tax increase of €6 per tonne is a missed opportunity and will probably make almost no difference, a climate expert has said. Joseph Curtin, senior fellow at the Institute of International and European Affairs and a member of the government’s climate change advisory council, welcomed the increase along with a commitment by ministers to raise carbon tax to €80 a tonne by 2030. However, he said a general election next year may jeopardise the government’s ability to deliver and that the budget should have been used to act decisively.
