Cuadrilla has been given the green light to begin fracking the UK’s first onshore horizontal shale gas well near Blackpool, after securing a clean bill of financial health from the government’s independent assessor. Energy and Clean Growth Minister Claire Perry today announced she has granted permission for Cuadrilla Bowland Ltd to drill shale rock approximately 2,300 metres below the Preston New Road site in Lancashire, subject to certain conditions being met.

The owner of Britain’s largest power plant faces an uphill battle to meet its full-year earnings targets after a string of shock outages cut power output in the first half of the year. FTSE 250 energy giant Drax produced almost a fifth less electricity in the first six months of the year compared to the first half of last year. The slowdown caused earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation to fall by 16pc to £102m, as Drax continues to pile cash into an overhaul of its coal-fired power units and keep growing its shareholder payouts. On a statutory basis pre-tax losses narrowed to £11.3m from £103m.

Other countries talk about it, Ireland is actually doing it: it’s turning its back on fossil fuel investments. In recent days members of the Dáil, the main law-making body in the Irish parliament, have passed a bill which will mean no more money goes into exploiting and using the coal, oil and gas which are among the principal drivers of global climate change.
