Rising carbon prices might provide an alternative answer to controversial direct political action. As prices rise, dirtier coal power plants become more expensive to run, and so generators switch to greener fuels to cut their costs. The cost of allowances has already been rising rapidly over recent weeks, helped in part by the summer heatwave pushing up demand for power. Now a new report from Carbon Tracker, released today, suggests this summer’s price hikes are a mere taste of things to come.
