Doorstep energy salesmen are approaching thousands of households every day as the industry revives the controversial practice that led to a mis-selling scandal seven years ago. The Times has learnt that at least a dozen small energy companies, about a quarter of all household suppliers, are using the tactic either directly or via third-party brokers. First Utility and Ovo Energy are paying commission for doorstep sales secured by Money Expert, a switching site that said it was knocking on nearly half a million doors each month. Money Expert, which began using the practice nationwide last year, said its 150 doorstep agents were now acting for more than ten suppliers and securing 700 sales a day. Other suppliers such as Octopus Energy and Utilita are using their own doorstep agents.
